Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom build? The right choice for a Gulf store depends on your catalogue, payments and growth plans. Here is a practical, no-hype comparison for the UAE.
For most UAE stores, Shopify is the pragmatic default. It is fast, secure, rarely goes down during a flash sale, and integrates cleanly with Tabby, Tamara, Apple Pay and the couriers Gulf shoppers use. Arabic and right-to-left themes are well supported.
The trade-offs are monthly fees and transaction costs, plus limits when you need something genuinely bespoke. For a clean catalogue and a team that wants to focus on selling rather than maintenance, that trade is usually worth it.
WooCommerce (on WordPress) gives you full control and no platform transaction fee, and it is a natural fit if content and blogging are central to your strategy. It handles Arabic well and has plugins for local payments.
The catch is responsibility: hosting, security, updates and performance are on you or your agency. Done well it is excellent; neglected, it gets slow and fragile — which quietly kills conversion.
A custom store makes sense when your model is unusual — complex B2B pricing, marketplaces, subscriptions, deep ERP or logistics integration — or when the storefront experience is itself a competitive advantage.
It costs more upfront and takes longer, but it removes platform limits entirely. For a standard retail catalogue, custom is usually over-engineering; for the right model, it is the only option that fits.
Whatever you pick, the platform must nail the UAE essentials: Tabby and Tamara, cash-on-delivery done smoothly, correct 5% VAT, Arabic storefront and checkout, and mobile-first speed. The platform matters less than executing those well.
